What the calculator shows
Choose a province or territory and enter either a pre-tax price or tax-included total. The result separates the federal and provincial portions where applicable and shows the combined rate.
Calculation method
For a pre-tax amount, each tax portion equals price multiplied by its rate. For a tax-included total, the pre-tax value equals total divided by one plus the combined rate. Quebec uses 5% GST plus 9.975% QST.
Current GST, HST, PST and QST rates by province
These standard rates are generated from the same dated rule set used by the calculator. Confirm place-of-supply and product taxability before applying them. .

| Alberta | 5% | 0% | 5% |

Inputs to confirm
The model assumes the standard rate and a fully taxable supply. Place-of-supply rules, exemptions, zero-rated goods, rebates and tax-on-tax treatment can change a real invoice.
Worked Ontario add-and-reverse example
For a fully taxable CA$100 amount in Ontario, the model shows CA$5 federal and CA$8 provincial tax, producing CA$113. Entering CA$113 as tax included recovers the same CA$100 base and CA$13 tax.
| Scenario | Entered amount | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario before tax | CA$100 | CA$113 total |
| Ontario tax included | CA$113 | CA$100 base |
| Exempt or zero-rated supply | Not classified | Confirm before calculating |
Province selection supplies a standard rate, not a taxability decision
GST, HST, PST, RST and QST labels describe different systems. The calculator applies the standard selected rates to the amount entered but does not classify the supply.
Federal and provincial components remain visible
The result separates the federal part from the provincial part where applicable. Quebec’s combined arithmetic and harmonized provinces are represented without pretending every tax is administered identically.
Place of supply and product rules come first
Delivery location, zero-rating, exemption, rebates, vehicle rules and business status can change the correct treatment. Confirm the taxable amount and jurisdiction before using the arithmetic.
Reverse mode extracts tax from an included total
The total is divided by one plus the combined rate, then the federal and provincial shares are calculated. Multiplying an already tax-included total by the rate would overstate tax.
